Holly Streekstra’s art practice employs video, sound, performance, installation, and object making, to investigate our inner subjective states and psychic vulnerability in the contemporary world. Her work examines the relationship between human nature and the nature of the physical universe. These sensory environments, anachronistic devices, and unexpected amusements give rise to questions about our desire for mystery and enchantment. She is interested in situating viewers in a position to confront their accepted beliefs via representations of traditional categories of knowledge found within societies. Holly is intrigued by that decisive moment when we suspend our disbelief and surrender to the potential for wonder. The implications this choice holds in our mediated existence points to our lack of resistance to persistent acts of persuasion in our postmodern lives.
