Cut Up Artists’ Statement

Now famous portrait of David Bowie and William Burroughs from 1973 Rolling Stone interview. This photograph, from that interview, has been prominently on display in every single Ten Chances HQ site since 2012.
Guest Lecturer

Abinadi Meza (AUSTIN)

Visiting artist Abinadi Meza created a workshop exercise for the residency cohort. The workshop introduced the ‘cut up’1 method to generate a creative and abstract artist statement unique to the naked lunch2 collage methodology.

  1. ‘cut up’ – a montage technique called the “cut-up,” where lines of text from newspapers and magazines, or from one’s own writings, are cut out, mixed up, and randomly rearranged into sentences carrying new meaning. (Design Observer)
  2. The Naked Lunch is a 1959 novel by American writer William S. Burroughs. The book is structured as a series of loosely connected vignettes. Burroughs stated that the chapters are intended to be read in any order.
